Just 20 of these spoons have been hand-carved for us by Amy using these birch logs from this sustainably managed woodland near Benenden in Kent. Just like our honeys, your spoon comes boxed, nestled in local hay and with a card telling you more about Amy, the maker.
Because birch is quick growing they sometimes have to thin out self seeded younger birch tress to let in more light for the slower growing oak and ash trees. It's from one of these self-seeded trees that these spoons have been carved from.
Amy only uses hand tools and hasn't sanded these to smooth them, but instead she's finished them with the skilled use of a super sharp knives which leave a smooth yet faceted surface showing the final cuts and making each one unique.
Birch has strong long fibres which make it so good for carving kitchen wares and we love the light colour and gentle grain so you can see all the cuts that Amy's made to perfect their shape. The finishing touch is the yellow painted handles, showing off the wood perfectly and making them a very special limited edition.
We include the story of the maker and send the spoon packed in hay grown in fields near us. All our packaging is plastic-free, recyclable and UK made.
For care, Amy recommends hand washing and storing in a ventilated place. They can be occasionally reoiled if wished with flaxseed, hemp, walnut or grapeseed oil (over the whole thing).
Adding a personal message:
If you'd like us to add a personal message, or just pass on some instructions to us, you'll need to add the British birch hand carved eating spoon to 'Add to Cart', and then you'll see the Comments Box. If you click 'Pay with G Pay' or others the box won't show - a weirdness of the system we're trying to change :)
